Railway cable thefts on the decrease

CABLE thefts on the railways are down by five per cent but the offence is still costing millions to replace, figures have revealed.

Residents have been plagued by thieves taking cable from their villages and towns to sell on - leaving communities across Doncaster completely isolated without power and phonelines.

Network Rail has reported thefts have decreased with 160 incidents recorded as opposed to 168 from the previous financial year in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

However, delay to passengers and compensation costs continue to rise with a 13 per cent increase from £1.5 million to £1.8 million because the thefts have spread to busier and more complex parts of the network.

Delays to travellers are up to 823 hours.
