A PROPOSED state-of-the-art college to be used by Isle students has moved a step closer.

Those behind the planned university technical college are putting the finishing touches to their bid before they are interviewed on February 5 by the Department for Education.

The advisory board that will present the case for a UTC based in Scunthorpe, include key partners the University of Hull, North Lindsey College, Able UK, Tata Steel and North Lincolnshire Council.

The centre would teach 14 to 19-year-olds from across the Isle and provide GCSE courses in English, maths and science, combined with a modern foreign language and humanities. It would also provide practical and technical qualifications recognised by employers and universities specialising in renewables and engineering.

Coun Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council said: “It is expected that all young people attending the UTC will go on to complete high level apprenticeships with an employer or further their studies at a university. Work is well underway to shape the vision and plan for how the UTC will achieve this.”

The council would like to hear residents’ views on the proposal by the end of next month.

To have your say, complete an online survey. One is for potential students and their parents/carers and another for businesses.

The board will be speaking with schools and academies to forge links. A decision on whether the UTC will get funding is expected by March. If successful it could be open by September 2014.
