Detectives in Doncaster have recently dealt with two men for falsely reporting incidents of robbery.

Earlier this month, a 39-year-old man from Cantley claimed he was robbed at knifepoint on Acacia Road in Cantley and forced to drive to a petrol station to use a credit card to purchase petrol for the “driver” of the car.

Officers found the allegation to be unsubstantiated. The man was arrested on suspicion of a false report of robbery and the man was given a caution and had to pay £150 for the release of his car, which was seized during the enquiry.

In another incident from August, a 32-year-old man from Rotherham reported to police that he had been robbed in Balby.

The incident was investigated and the man was arrested on suspicion of making a false report of robbery. He has been released on bail on while enquiries continue.

Superintendent Eddie Murphy said: “Falsely reporting a crime is a serious offence. People who make up incidents are taking valuable time and resources away from those with a genuine need. We want to ensure police are working on real incidents to help victims.”
