A HEADTEACHER has praised police visits to schools in the Isle warning pupils about the dangers of the internet.

Epworth PC Dean Southam, who took up his post before Christmas, visited schools in the area to help bring home the dangers posed by online predators and inappropriate behaviour by the pupils themselves.

PC Southam said: “In recent weeks myself and members of my team have attended Althorpe and Keadby Primary School to talk about Internet safety and the use of computers. The information given to year two to year six was greatly received and proved extremely useful.

“Also I have attended a drop- in session held at the Axholme Academy in Crowle. This session was held for pupils of all years and was to discuss any issues raised. I felt that this drop-in session was extremely useful and I intend to hold further meetings on a monthly basis.”

Headteacher of the Axholme Academy Joe Sellars said: “We have got a new officer on the block, PC Southam who is very proactive coming into school with drop-in sessions giving pupils the opportunity to talk about issues of concern in the community and bringing a human face to the police.

“The internet sessions were about being safe online and safeguarding against all those dangers that pupils can put themselves in.

“It is particularly useful to have an officer coming to school as they are more aware than most people of what the dangers are.

“Pupils can put themselves in a dangerous situation conducting themselves inappropriately and being open to abuse.

“Most of the students use Facebook. It is a well known opportunity for young people to bully and be awful towards other youngsters. We try to be open talk about the issues with students and parents and we have had parents along for E safety sessions”.
