Police are appealing for information after a motorist was spotted driving slowly past a 10-year-old girl cycling home from school in Crowle.

The youngster’s mother was riding a short distance behind her at the time and later reported the incident to police because she felt the vehicle’s movements were suspicious.

The car contained two men but they did not attempt to talk to the girl or stop the vehicle.

It happened on Mill Road on Monday, October 8, at about 3.25pm.

Officers searched for the dark blue vehicle but were unable to locate it.

The appeal comes after detectives in Scunthorpe launched an investigation into the alleged attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl in Annes Crescent on Friday, October 5.

Meanwhile, police have also appealed to residents not to panic over unfounded rumours of other incidents being spread on social network websites including Facebook, and said “hoax” reports risked harming their investigation.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: “It is not known whether the men in the vehicle had any intention of approaching the young girl or indeed why they were driving so slowly down the road.

“Officers are keen to reiterate that children and their parents do need to be aware of the general stranger danger advice however would also point out that there is no reason to panic and worry unduly.

“If anyone saw the car and has any more information about it or the people travelling in it, or indeed the driver of the vehicle itself they are asked to contact Humberside Police on the non emergency number 101 referring to log 461 of 08 October 2012.”
