PHINN BACKS POPPY APPEAL

BESTSELLING author Gervase Phinn has launched this year's Poppy Appeal on behalf of the Thorne branch of the Royal British Legion.

Mr Phinn, a former Yorkshire schools inspector whose wry books about his former job have earned him favourable comparisons to James Herriott, is a long-standing supporter of the Legion's work with injured and disabled war veterans. In the 60 years since the end of the Second World War the Legion has cared not only for veterans of that conflict but of Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands, the two wars in Iraq, as well as other skirmishes not so instantly remembered such as in Malaya and Korea, which means the need for funding the Legion's activities is just as great now as it has ever been.
