APPEAL: Police have released CCTV images of a man they are trying to trace in connection with a bogus caller who tricked his way into a woman's home and when he left, 80 was taken from her purse.

POLICE have released this image of a man they want to trace in connection with a bogus caller scam after an elderly woman had money stolen from her purse.

The incident happened when a man followed the pensioner into the communal area of the Emley House flats where she lives in St James’ Street.

He tricked his way into her home by saying he needed to check the water pressure and once inside, asked the woman to hold the taps in her kitchen to feel for any changes in the pressure.

After about 20 minutes the man left and the woman later discovered drawers had been opened in several rooms and £80 was missing from her purse in her handbag which was in the living room.

Police want to trace the man from their CCTV footage in connection with the theft - known as a distraction burglary - which happened on Wednesday, January 11, at around 4pm.

Insp Amanda Hunter said: “I would urge anybody who may recognise the man from the CCTV image to contact us immediately. I would also like to advise residents to be vigilant to this type of offence. If someone calls at your door without an appointment, always ask to see their ID and check with their company before allowing them to enter. The simple message is if your not sure, don’t open the door.”

Anybody with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 671 of the January 11, 2012, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
