On course for record

HUNDREDS of people helped wildlife experts identify more than 1000 different species at a Dearne beauty spot over the weekend.

The Barnsley Bioblitz, held at the RSPB Old Moor Wetlands Centre in Wombwell, saw around 700 people join scientists and centre staff to help record as many different species of wildlife as possible in just 48 hours.

Wildlife enthusiasts hoped to set a record by finding over 1000 species – and it looks like they did just that.

Site Manager Matthew Capper said: “Although the final figure isn’t yet in, as some species will take a while to count and catalogue, we’re confident that over 1000 different species were found over the weekend, which is a great success and a real testament to the hard work of everyone involved.”

Discoveries included a Baird’s Sandpiper, a rare wading bird normally found in the United States.
