New children's hospice opens doors
A NEW hospice offering care for critically ill children across the county officially opens its doors tomorrow.
Bluebell Wood, one of the area's most popular charities, will welcome its first two children and families for residential care at its new purpose-built facility in Sheffield.
The forerunner to Bluebell Wood, the Richard Foundation, was launched ten years ago following the death of 11-year-old Richard Cooper from Thorne who was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease, Ataxia Telangiectasia, and also developed cancer before he died in 1997.
The hospice, which was originally intended for Doncaster in the grounds of St Catherine's Hospital in Balby only for the local authority to veto proposals, will initially open on Cramfit Road with two bedrooms before a phased opening of all eight beds designed for respite, emergency and end of life care.
Children from across South Yorkshire, East Derbyshire and the North Midlands will stay at the centre for periods of up to two weeks.
The hospice will cost Bluebell Wood, which has a shop on Scot Lane in the town centre, 2.4m every year to run - 96 per cent of which will need to be generated through fundraising.
