MP praises college payment scheme

JOHN Healey MP has praised Dearne Valley College for introducing a new scheme which offers cash rewards to students with maximum attendance.

The Wath-based college’s Training Allowance offers students who have 100 per cent attendance £10 a week, plus a £100 bonus if they achieve maximum attendance for the year.

DVC is the only college in South Yorkshire to offer a weekly payment, following the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) in 2010.

Mr Healey Labour MP for Wentworth and Dearne, said: “The EMA has been a lifeline for young people, helping them to stay on and succeed in education.

“Since it was got rid of, in areas like ours fewer young people are going to college and attendance and completion rates have suffered, while youth unemployment has tripled.

“I am pleased that our local college is willing to step in and support students where the government has refused to do so.”

The DVC Training Allowance is a flat-fee and is not means tested.

Ioan Morgan, DVC Interim Principal, said: “It is the college’s responsibility to make learning as accessible as possible and the new DVC Training Allowance will have a significant impact for our 16 to 18 year old learners.

“Not only will it support them financially, but it will also help to instil the importance of good attendance – a life skill that will support them in their future careers.”
