PUPILS at one Goldthorpe primary school have found a new natural talent.

The work of youngsters at Sacred Heart RC Primary School is now receiving more special treatment, so that every child in the school can enjoy it.

Teaching assistant Jane Dickinson explained: “We are working towards our eco-schools silver award, and are extending our nature area so that children with special needs can benefit from it too.

“We are placing tactile boards and sensory mirrors within it, along with tables and chairs in a quiet spot where pupils can spend a bit of time.”

A new pond is one item on the school’s green agenda, along with work on bio-diversity and a focus on wildlife and mini-beasts. Helpers from Groundwork Dearne Valley have agreed to help with clearing and fencing a part of the site, where climber plants such as honeysuckle are to be planted.

A pathway has already been designed and laid out by teaching assistant Caroline Guest with pupil helper Joshua Sykes. Goldthorpe’s local Asda store is supporting the kids’ efforts, by making them one of three local schemes for shoppers to support with token votes in store. The charity receiving the most votes will receive £100 and Asda will fundraise for it over several few months. Runners-up receive £25.
