Mayor faces judge over library cuts

Doncaster Mayor Peter Davies.

Doncaster Mayor Peter Davies.

MAYOR Peter Davies is facing legal action over a decision to overrule councillors who tried to save the town’s libraries.

Mr Davies proposed a budget which would result in the closure of two libraries and see 12 more being run by community volunteers, but two-thirds of councillors voted for an amendment to keep funding libraries, which Mr Davies refused to do under his powers as elected mayor.

Now a judge has granted permission to an unnamed resident to bring an application for judicial review challenging the decision.
