Manor Farm is the new ‘Bronx’ of Rotherham
TWO horrific ‘glassing’ attacks are the latest in a spate of incidents on an estate nicknamed locally as the ‘Bronx’ of Rotherham.
A gangland culture has transformed the once quiet Manor Farm estate at Rawmarsh in to a place where folk cower in their homes at night, claim residents.
On Friday evening, one 30-year old man was glassed in the face then beaten up off Central Drive, while a 38-year old suffered a gashed head and severe beating in an unprovoked attack on Wild Avenue where a glass bottle was smashed over the back of his head before a group closed in on him. Both incidents occurred around 7pm and both men needed hospital treatment.
Estate residents, who will not be named for fear of reprisals, spoke of three gangs who are ‘ruling’ the estate.
A witness to one Friday night beating said: “There were four or five blokes slamming kicks in to a kid on the floor. When I shouted they disappeared. The victim was a mess and wasn’t coherent. In my opinion it’s all down to drugs. You see them queueing up. You could say there are people moved in who attract a strange clientele. But we rarely see police round here, unfortunately”.
Members of the Manor Farm TARA held a meeting with police this week, that focused on the estate’s troubles. They claimed as many as 17 ASBOs had been handed out in a previous month, with issue locations marked on a map given to them by the SNT.
A spokeswoman said: “There are three main gangs of youths from school age upwards. They intimidate people, break in to properties and rip telephone wires down. In some areas there’s rowdiness and loud music, night in, night out. It is like the Bronx”.
A Rotherham Council spokesman denied that 17 Asbos were served. He said: “We can’t comment on individual cases. However, tenancy notices have been issued and there are cases waiting to go to court. Several acceptable behaviour contracts have been issued and we are working closely with residents to ensure that Manor Farm Estate remains a safe and peaceful place.”
Witnesses described Friday’s attackers as “about eight men aged between 18 to 25, all wearing ‘casual’ clothes”. They were being loud and appeared to have been drinking alcohol.
