Little Sienna gears up for fundraising flurry
THE mother of a little girl with severe heart problems is gearing up for a fundraising flurry towards the hospital where she has received top notch care.
Sienna Singleton (4) nearly died at just six weeks of age as her heart defects had gone undetected but she was saved and has since undergone two major operations and faces a lifetime of regular surgery.
She was born with transposition - where a valve is the wrong way round; several holes in her heart; and with one, rather than two pumping chambers. She receives treatment at the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), where her mum, Kerry, says her care has been "second to none."
Kerry said: "They cannot be faulted. They are brilliant with Sienna and also look after the whole family." This includes dad Pete and brothers, Callum (8) and Kye (6).
At just six weeks old, Sienna underwent six hours of open heart surgery, followed by a 16-hour operation in June 2008, from which she had a one in four chance of survival, said Kerry.
"Sienna will have a lifetime of surgery but she is a determined little girl and is a happy little child."
The Moorends youngster attends a playgroup and starts at Carlton Primary School this year - as Kerry hails from the village - and she generally leads as normal a life as possible. "She does get breathless very easily but she tries her best," said Kerry.
She has regularly raised money for the Children's Heart Surgery Fund at the LGI during the past few years and now she is planning two further events.
The first is for National Heart Day on February 20, when she is urging people to wear red to work for the day in return for a donation to the charity.
The second is a Casino Night, to be held at Drax Sports and Social Club, on March 27. Tickets for this are 12, to include food, a DJ, entry into a raffle and an amount of play money to be used for betting. The evening, which starts at 7.30pm, will be for over 18s only and will be formal dress. Tickets are available from Kerry on 07827 961919.
Anyone who would like to take part in the wear red to work day is also asked to contact Kerry .
