TWO village libraries have been announced as the first to close in the borough following plans to axe 14 sites.

Doncaster Council has confirmed Carcroft and Denaby will close their doors for the final time before Christmas despite objections from residents in the two areas.

A council spokesman confirmed Carcroft Library in Skellow Road, would close at 6pm on December 20, and Denaby’s site in Church Road, was to shut the day after at 5pm.

A proposal to axe over half of the borough’s 26 libraries in the borough was announced by the council after it was revealed several of the sites had a dwindling number of customers.

The move has led to several protests across those areas affected including a campaign group called Save Doncaster Libraries being formed.
