Jail and ASBO for man who racially abused Conisbrough shopkeeper
A MAN who racially abused a shop keeper in a Conisbrough off-licence has been jailed and banned from getting drunk in public.
Brendon Kelly, aged 49, went into the shop and tried to buy a can of lager, despite not having enough money, Doncaster magistrates were told.
He became verbally abusive, and used racially motivated insults at the shopkeeper, as two other people within the store look on.
Police were called to the scene and found Kelly a short distance from the shop. Officers discovered that he was in possession of a six-inch kitchen knife.
Kelly was charged with being in possession of a bladed article in a public place and for a racially aggravated public order offence, and has now been convicted of both.
Magistrates jailed Kelly, of no fixed address, for 12 weeks, and handed him a two year anti-social behaviour order.
Chf Insp Neil Thomas said: “I hope this sends out a clear message that South Yorkshire Police and the courts will work together to ensure that this type of crime is dealt with robustly. The message is clear, we will not tolerate hate crime.”
Anyone who believes they may have witnessed or been a victim of this type of crime is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Conditions of the ASBO state Kelly must not be in a state of drunkenness in any public place in South Yorkshire.
