Isle police chief wants criminals to ‘pay back’ to society

THE Isle’s police chief wants criminals to give more back to communities by carrying out more work in neighbourhoods as part of their punishment.

Matthew Grove, Humberside Police’s first police and crime commissioner, has published his draft action plan on what his priorities will be during his term in office.

He said he wants to focus on prevention, and develop community justice initiatives so criminals are seen to be ‘paying back to local people’.

Mr Grove said he wants to provide ‘first class services’ to crime victims and work with other bodies such as community safety groups.

He said: “This plan should act as a ‘guiding hand’ for dealing with and overcoming the policing and community safety challenges that face us.

“As with other public sector organisations, contending with the present, deep spending cuts and the commitment to deliver ‘value for money’ provides me, Humberside Police and partners with a raft of challenges and opportunities.”

“In a nutshell I aim to prevent and reduce crime and improve public safety; protect the public; increase public trust and confidence in the police and improve the quality of service delivered to victims.”

Tackling the issue of re-offending and ‘striking a balance’ between rehabilitation and punishment, while providing value for money to the taxpayer is another core focus of Mr Grove’s plan.

To do this, he said he will adopt two of the key principles of modern policing – ‘partnerships and prevention’.

A public consultation has been launched for people to have their say on the proposals. Public meetings are also planned.

The consultations ends on February 28 and the final version of the plan will be published at the end of March.
