Isle GCSE pupils top of the class

THE Isle’s secondary schools are among the best in the region for GCSE results, according to newly published league tables.
Both Epworth’s South Axholme Academy and Crowle’s Axholme Academy have beaten the county and national average for the number of teenagers achieving the benchmark of five GCSEs or equivalent at A* to C, including English and maths.
South Axholme saw 65 per cent of youngsters sitting exams last summer hit the Government benchmark, while 63 per cent of Axholme Academy pupils achieved the grade,
The national average was 58.8 per cent and the North Lincolnshire Council score was 56.3 per cent.
The results placed the Epworth and Crowle schools fifth and sixth respectively in the county league tables.
Marie Lister, head, of South Axholme Academy in Burnham Road, said: “It is a fantastic result - the analysis shows the vast majority of our key indicators are significantly above the national average.”
The school’s percentage of pupils achieving an A*-C in maths was 83 per cent and was 68 per cent in English.
She added: “The performance of pupils across the board in all areas was very good, not just in the core subjects.”
The percentage of children at Axholme Academy achieving an A* to C grade in maths and English was 76 and 67 respectively.
Joe Sellars, head of the Wharf Road secondary, said: “I am particularly pleased with the 76 per cent pass rate in grades A* to C for maths, which puts us in the top few per cent in the country, with 67 per cent in English.
Both schools also beat the national average of 1,000 in the ‘value added score’ category which indicates the work teachers have carried out to help pupils progress since they left primary school and takes into account childrens’ eight best exam results. South Axholme’s score was 1,009.7 while its Crowle counterpart’s was 1,014.2.
Mr Sellars added: “I am absolutely delighted on behalf of the students who left us in 2012. They over-achieved with a value added score of 1,014.2. Anything above 1,000 is better than would be expected for that age group.
“All of our most able pupils made at least the three levels of progress expected.”
