ROLE MODEL: Alan Rayment, of Crowle, (seen here after receiving his Honorary Doctorate) who has been nominated for a National Diversity Award.

The 36-year-old paratriathlete has started the new year in the same way he finished the old one, being recognised for his inspirational efforts in sporting and charitable arenas.

Alan, of Windsor Road, was voted the 2011 Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year as well as scooping the East Midlands Participation Coach of the Year by Triathlon England.

He also qualified as a teacher after gaining his BA Certificate in Education and received an Honorary Doctorate in Health Sciences from York University.

The father-of-two explained how he started a new job as the manager of the Kingsway Fitness Suite at North Lindsey College last month and that the National Diversity nomination came out of the blue.

“I got an e-mail through so I rang them to make sure it was true,” he added. “I’ve been nominated by the Humber Sport Partnership and the Goodwin Trust.

“I was taken aback. I’ve won some awards in the past but just to be nominated for a diversity award is good enough for me, especially as a role model.”

Alan is a bilateral amputee who has been in a wheelchair since 1997 but this has not stopped him raising thousands of pounds for charity via an impressive back catalogue of sporting achievements.

This includes numerous triathlons, the London Marathon, Great North Run and hand cycling almost 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.

Alan was also one of 15 paratriathletes specially invited to take part in the Tyne Tunnel 2K challenge last year, 24 hours before completing another Great North Run.

“Being nominated for this award is a bit of a Brucey bonus to be honest,” he added.

“I hope I am setting a good example, not just to my kids but everyone I work with and members of the public.

“Life has to go on and there are people worse off than me.”

The deadline for nominations is July 27 and the awards final will be held at The Midland Hotel, Manchester, on September 21.
