High praise for students’ jobs scheme

A GROUP of students have received recognition for taking part in a programme to help tackle unemployment in the region.

Students of The Prince’s Trust Team Programme at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology attended a presentation event at Malting’s Youth Centre after the completion of their 12 week course.

The group set up their own community project and arranged their own fundraising events to buy the equipment needed for it to be completed.

Fundraising activities included a name the bear competition and a bun sale at the college.

They chose to help the Malting’s, based in Rotherham, where they created a new sign for the building, painted a mural wall with a musical theme and built raised flowerbeds.

The students also carried out voluntary work at a number of care centres around Rotherham where they spent time socialising and helping the service users.

One of the students, Tara Townsend, 19, said: “The whole programme has been fantastic.

“I have grown in confidence and have made some new friends.

“I have enjoyed the community work, especially helping others during the voluntary work.”

Jenny Watson, Team Leader for the Programme at the College, said: “I am very proud of all of them for all their hard work and determination to change their lives.

“We have Jordan Hollis who has enrolled on to music course, Tara has been accepted on to a motor vehicle course and Beth Wharton is going on to do a Childcare course.”

The Prince’s Trust will help around 50,000 disadvantaged young people this year, giving them the confidence and skills to turn their lives around.

More than three in four young people completing the course will move on to work, education, or training.

Many of those taking part in the programme have now enrolled on courses at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology.
