A COURAGEOUS woman lost her brave battle with cancer while on holiday celebrating her mum’s birthday.

Angie Marsh had been fighting Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for around six years and was in remission before tragedy struck in Tenerife.

The 34-year-old, who had a bone marrow transplant last year, was with mum Carol Allport to celebrate her 54th birthday, along with sister Katie Allport, 23, and family friend Becky Beighton but when they arrived at the hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, Angie felt pain in her leg.

Cafe worker Angie, who has a 16-year-old son Kieran, was taken to hospital and told she had Deep Vein Thrombosis. She was given medication for the condition, however, over four days it had spread to her heart and set off a number of attacks.

Medical staff tried in vain for three hours to save the brave battler who tragically died on August 25.

Her devastated mum, of Airstone Road in Askern, said: “She was a real people person and could speak to anyone. She was so strong throughout her illness, she never let it get her down.

“She was a really bubbly, smiley person. She loved working in the cafe because she enjoyed talking to people. Everybody enjoyed her company.

“She was so looking forward to that holiday, she couldn’t wait to go on it.

“The holiday staff were excellent with us throughout everything that was happening. Becky was fantastic too, she was so strong for us when we were out there.”

Angie, who had three doting sisters and a step-sister, lived in the borough and went to schools including Campsmount Technology College and Outwood Academy Adwick.

She moved with her son to Redcar in North Yorkshire, where her 54-year-old dad Stephen Hodgin also lives, and worked at a cafe.

Her family told the Free Press about Angie’s love for shoe shopping and reading and that she also taught herself nail art and took on a tiling course.

Her funeral was held at St Peter’s Church in Askern on Monday where 27-year-old sister Lindsey Deere sang Mariah Carey’s Hero. A service was also held at Redhouse Cemetery in Adwick-le-Street.

Sister Sue Ryan, 37, added: “She was the life and soul of any party, she was never in a bad mood and could always make you laugh.

“She could walk into any room and light it up, she just had that way about her. She was so, so strong, such a fighter.”
