A CHILDREN’S centre in the Isle has received a glowing Ofsted report for the care and education it provides to families across the area.

Inspectors found services, leadership and effectiveness at the North Axholme Children’s Centre, based at Keadby and Crowle, to be good and making a positive difference to families, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances.

Of 415 children aged under five, just over a quarter live in an area which is in the 30 per cent most disadvantaged in the country.

Typical comments of users are that the centre is “very helpful” and that children love to go.

Inspectors said: “skilful centre managers have created a highly effective staff team. Staff are well informed to provide good care, guidance and support which makes a positive difference.”

Along with its quality activities at its two bases, the centre is seen to support parents in their own homes well.

And its work in helping to safeguard children and vulnerable adults is classed as “outstanding”. The very low number of children subject to child-protection plans or classed as in need is attributed to the great support given to families before they reach any crisis point.

Leadership and management are strong, said the report, and feedback is gathered frequently from centre users. Improvements could include working to reduce obesity levels of children, increasing the involvement of partner agencies in registering families, and in using data to set targets for improving health.

Families using the centre feel very safe as all staff and users make health and safety a high priority. Parents can attend paediatric first aid courses, have home-safety assessments and take part in talks during sessions. Emergency hospital admissions are much lower than the national average.
