Funeral of Isle educator

FINAL respects were paid this week to a well known educator and priest who died aged 81.

Reverend Donald Cornelius was a popular figure in teaching circles across the Isle after spending more than 40 years in education.

He served as headmaster at North Axholme Comprehensive School in Crowle for 26 years and was believed to be the longest serving head in Humberside when he retired in 1992.

He died on Christmas Day at Cumberworth Lodge care home in Graizelound, Haxey. A funeral service took place at St Lawrence’s Church in Scunthorpe on Tuesday afternoon.

Along with his dedication to teaching, Rev Cornelius also served as a non-stipendiary minister at churches in Crowle from 1997 to 2002.

He was also popular with patients at Scunthorpe General Hospital while working as an assistant chaplain.

Son-in-law Mick Morgan, 62, of Crowle, said: “He was very popular. Many former students later in life asked him to carry out their weddings.”

Reverend Jonathan Thacker, Rural Dean for the Isle of Axholme Deanery, added: “He cared greatly for his parishioners.”

He was a widower and leaves two children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
