Flood defences to be ready by end of year

WORK on new £6.4 million flood defences in Stainforth has progressed, with a completion date set for the end of the year.

The work, which is replacing the existing flood defences, is expected to protect almost 2,000 homes against flood water.

The project first got the go ahead following the June 2007 floods, where more than 80 millimetres of water fell in 16 hours, causing mass flooding in South Yorkshire.

Tests showed the defences in the River Don to be inadequate after floodwater came within 300 milimetres of the Stainforth defences.

Speaking about the work, Anthony Myatt, project manager, said: "The improved flood defences are expected to reduce the risk of flooding to many hundreds of homes for decades to come."

"Reinforcing the old flood wall had been planned for some time and the scheme will include landscaping to improve riverside access for the community."

The old flood defences are more than 60-years-old, causing the old brick to be removed earlier in the year and replaced by hundreds of one tonne sandbags. Piling work then began on the West Bank with contractors installing steel sheet piles to the height of the original flood wall.

Now work is underway to continue the same plans to the East Bank. Both areas will then be built with brickwork to match neighbouring properties.

It is hoped the new plans installed by the Environmental Agency with Stainforth Waterside and Regeneration Group, will reduce flooding to sections of the M18 motorway as well as improving the Doncaster to Hull railway line.

The scheme is expected to be completed at the end of the year.
