Flood measures to be introduced in Bolton
Flood prevention measures will be fitted to 48 homes in Bolton-on-Dearne thanks to £274,000 funding grant from the Environment Agency.
Barnsley Council was successful in its bid for the money which will be used on the houses that were inundated by the high floodwaters of June 2007.
The work will take place at properties in Mexborough Road, Lowfield Road, Meadowgates and Riverside Gardens.
Flood consultation surveys will be carried out shortly to assess what measures will need to be put in place at the various properties. Suitable contractors will then be identified.
The project will begin in the new year and is set to take several weeks to finish.
Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Development, Environment and Culture (Operations) at Barnsley Council, said: “I’m pleased that we have been successful in getting this funding which is much needed in the Dearne.
“These works are a positive move by Barnsley Council in supporting residents in this area.”
Equipment includes air-brick covers and removable door barriers put in place at times of flood risk to provide a watertight seal on external doors.
One-way valves for waste pipes will also be fitted to prevent flood water flowing up the property’s waste water and sewage pipes.
As part of this Property Level Protection (PLP) scheme a consultation event for eligible residents in the Bolton-on-Dearne area is planned for Wednesday, November 7.
Council staff will be on hand to provide further details about the project along with other flooding related information and advice.
Residents affected by flooding from other areas of Barnsley can also get flooding advice from the National Flood Forum flood exhibition trailer which will be at various locations across the borough on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (November 7-9). Exact locations and times will be confirmed shortly.
The trailer has been provided by the National Flood Forum, the flood victim’s charity.
