Eleven pupils from Trinity Academy at Thorne were given the chance to complete a fire service life course as part of the recent Neighbourhood Alliance activity in the area.

They were put through their paces with training in hose work, working in confined spaces and the use of breathing apparatus at Thorne Fire Station.

Fire safety within the home and hoax calls were also discussed, giving an insight into the role of the fire service.

PC Chris Plumridge, the police’s children and young persons’ officer, said: “This group of young people have been a pleasure to work with, remaining positive, whatever challenge they were given. Their self esteem, communication skills and sense of empowerment was evident and grew as the course progressed. Hopefully they will use this experience in school, as well as in their day to day life.”

Paul Charnley, arson intervention officer, said: “They were not put off by the physical challenges or the cold weather outdoors.”
