JUST like the vehicles that have to use it, the saga of Epworth’s Turbary Road keeps rumbling on.
The road and its surface – or lack of it – has been a thorn in the side of the town council longer than any councillor has been in office.
It has even been suggested that the council has spent more time considering this one issue than any other topic in its history.
Coun Bob Fish summed up feelings at the last meeting when he said: “It is iniquitous in this day and age that we should ask people to put up with this dangerous road. We need to put a surface down.”
He read a letter from a resident pointing out that council officials had walked down the road on a sunny afternoon. It said: “They should come again on a dark, rainy night. Some holes on the road are eight inches deep and filled with water.”
And then Coun Fish dropped his bombshell: “That letter was written in the 1960s,” he said. “This issue has been in front of this council for more than 50 years. We must resolve it. It’s not right that 25 properties down there don’t have the amenities that they pay for.”
Meanwhile Epworth Town Council, which has funds set aside to pay for a substantial part of any resurfacing, is again drawing North Lincolnshire’s attention to formal applications it submitted in September last year for modifications to footpaths, leaving a 3.2m width that could be resurfaced for vehicles.
