TALENTED schoolgirl Ella Whitehouse has won a top prize for writing a poem about her home county.

The Mexborough School pupil penned ‘Yorkshire’ for a contest by teacher recruitment agency Vision for Education which was open to pupils from across South Yorkshire.

Her poem about life in the county beat up to 1,000 entries to be named the best one in the contest.

She took home a certificate and has won a visit from poet Terry Caffrey, who is holding a workshop at the school today.

Ella, 13, of Mexborough, said: “My inspiration was just everyday life and scenes from the countryside. I never expected to win.”

English teacher Corrine Kelly said: “We are very proud of her.”
