POLICE are reminding residents in Mexborough, Denaby and Conisbrough to keep their windows and doors locked to help prevent burglaries.

Officers are warning it only takes a thief seconds to sneak in through an unlocked door or window while people enojoy the warmer weather outside.

A Doncaster Police spokesman said: “Sneak-in burglaries can be prevented by keeping your windows and doors locked when you are out in the garden.

“Keep your valuables out of view from prying eyes by putting them away in cupboards.”

They have issued a list of tips to reduce the risk of becoming a burglary victim:-

*Keep all doors and windows locked at all times even when inside

*Do not leave keys visible for example on a key rack

*Keep valuable property out of sight where possible

*Use lighting and switches when possible to indicate someone is at home

*Take keys, wallets and other valuables upstairs when going to bed

*Have effective house alarms and window locks fitted

*Join a neighbourhood watch scheme if you have one in your area

*Speak to your crime reduction officer or safer neighbourhood officer for further advice.
