Doncaster Council is establishing closer links with the Earl of Doncaster, Richard Walter John Montagu Douglas Scott.
The Earl, 10th Duke of Buccleuch and 12th Duke of Queensbury, Knight of the British Empire and Deputy Lieutenant has visited Doncaster to offer his support for the project.
Earlier this month Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, met with the Duke in the Mansion House to discuss a plan to create a more lasting link between the Dukes of Buccleuch and the historic market town of Doncaster.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Mayor Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Symeon Waller of the internet based Doncaster History project, and local businessman Graham Rhoden who owns the Earl of Doncaster hotel.
The Duke said: “Heritage threads are so important and for the individual fortunate enough to bear the title of Earl of Doncaster to have no link with the town would be sad particularly when there is a willingness on both parts to nurture it.”
Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “I was delighted to meet the Duke and have high hopes for a growing relationship between him and the borough.
“The Earl of Doncaster is an important part of our rich heritage and I am very grateful to him for sparing the time to visit the town to start this process.”
