Communities dive into the Jubilee spirit - Picture gallery

Waiting for Video...

WHETHER it was picnics in the park, stalls or musical entertainment, communities across Doncaster made sure their Diamond Jubilee celebrations were fit for the Queen.

Face-painted children got into the spirit of Her Majesty’s milestone as they waved their red, white and blue flags, enjoyed home-made treats and played games.

Scores flocked to Thorne Memorial Park to take in bunting-clad stalls, demonstrations from the town’s Green Top Cheerleaders and even boyband superstars One Direction made an appearance - on the sound system.

Volunteers made a royal effort to decorate Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Church in Main Street for a jubilee party. There was also a competition encouraging folk to dress their homes.

Jenny Garrett, 71, a church steward from Bawtry Road, said: “It’s so good to be able to get everyone together, we’ve tried to hold different events from Saturday onwards like a big tea and a Jubilee fair which have been really good.”

Other major events saw the residents of Askern turn out in force for a gala.

In tribute to the River Thames Pageant Askern lake had a float parade of its own, as well as a funfair, charity stalls and demonstrations from a steel band and the former Askern Colliery Band. The town was one of the places in the borough also chosen to stage a jubilee beacon.

Meanwhile welly wanging, circus games and musical performances were among the attractions at Tickhill Recreation Ground with a giant picnic and the odd bottle of bubbly in honour of the Queen.

Despite the rain residents in Kirk Sandall and Edenthorpe came together for a Big Jubilee Picnic at Canon Popham School.

Dozens of residents descended on Church Lane recreation ground in Barnburgh for the unveiling of a Jubilee plaque. Susan Burton, who was born in the Queen’s coronation year of 1952 and has lives in the village ever since helped perform the honours.

Other towns and villages staging celebrations included Bawtry, Mexborough and Auckley.
