CCTV catches duo in town centre robbery
A thief narrowly escaped a jail sentence after he was caught on CCTV robbing two men.
Police used cameras to trace the movements of Mexborough man Paul Skelton after he and another man stole from two 20-year-old men near Doncaster town centre.
The 21-year-old, of Coniston Court, and Stefan Cook, 20, of Beechfield Road, Hyde Park, appeared at Doncaster Crown Court and admitted the robbery in Thorne Road in September last year.
The court heard Cook threatened the men by saying he was in possession of a knife and stole their mobile phones.
Both men were arrested by officers after they were identified by CCTV operatives who traced their movements through the town centre.
Skelton received a 12-month suspended sentence and Cook was sentenced to two years in a young offenders’ institution.
Det Con Andrea Smith said after the case: “Robbery is a very distressing and frightening crime that can severely affect the victim’s confidence.
“The sentence imposed reflects the nature of this crime, and I hope it sends out a clear message that South Yorkshire Police will not tolerate any type of criminal activity.”
