Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery has been given a £120,000 boost to improve facilities.

The Chequer Road venue was one of 11 in Yorkshire awarded grants worth nearly £2 million from the Renaissance Strategic Support Fund and the Designation Development Fund to encourage more visitors through the doors.

The £120,000 Arts Council England grant will be spent on improving its offer to visitors, increase its income and reduce electricity consumption.

Developments include better quality and more energy efficient lighting, improved environmental control and re-fitting the shop and café area.

The improvements will help the museum bring high quality art works to Doncaster and encourage new visitors to the museum, as well as increase the museum’s income from room hire and external events.

Mayor Peter Davies, said: “This announcement is wonderful news for the development of arts and culture across the borough.

“This funding will see significant improvements made to the art gallery, shop, cafe and meetings facilities which will help make the museum more sustainable.

“It will help attract quality art works and encourage more visitors to explore the interesting artefacts and learn about our long and distinguished history. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery is a treasured asset nestling in the town’s new Civic and Cultural Quarter.”

Cluny Macpherson, regional director for Arts Council England, said: “Yorkshire is home to a really diverse range of great museums and I’m delighted that we are investing in 12 of them with these two funds. It will enable the Museums to make the most of their amazing collections and to find new ways for people enjoy the assets on their doorstep. We will also see museums on a stronger financial footing, so future generations will benefit.”
