BIG-HEARTED cadets in Mexborough have been presented with certificates for completing a fund-raising bike ride in aid of a charity for blind ex-servicemen and women.

Members of the Mexborough Army Cadet Force raised £350 for the Blind Veterans UK charity by finishing a 13.1 mile bike ride between Sprotborough and Pollington.

This was part of the Cadet and Youth Challenge competition organised by the charity, which challenged cadets to think up innovative ways of completing the distance.

Ex-soldier Simon Brown, who was shot in the head aged 28 in Basra, Iraq, while saving the lives of six comrades, visited the cadets to present them with their certificates.

Simon, of West Yorkshire, who now works as a motivational speaker for the charity.

He said: “Blind Veterans UK is very grateful to the Mexborough Army Cadet Force for organising a very innovative and successful cadet and youth challenge.”

Detachment Commander SSI Mark Davies, who led the group, added: “The participants were able to learn so much about simple things like looking after a bike and what the etiquette is when it comes to cycling on the road.”
