Busy road is accident in the making
Cars parked on the footpath on Netherhall Road, meaning pedestrians are having to walk on the road to get around them.
PENSIONERS and children are being forced to walk on a busy stretch of road because of cars parked across a pavement.
Pedestrians on a stretch of Nether Hall Road in Doncaster town centre are increasingly having to avoid cars reversing into the road, pulling into to park on the kerb and turning into roads without indicating, according to pedestrians.
Adrian Hilton, a scheme caretaker for Yorkshire Housing based on Nether Hall Road, walks along the stretch of road around ten times a day as part of his job, and says he fears it is only a matter of time before someone is run over.
He said: “The other day I saw an elderly couple with their shopping have to step out into the road, when a bus was coming to get round a car parked over the kerb.
“I have nearly been run over a few times too - it is just a lawless stretch of road.
“On Monday mornings a lot of pensioners go to use the Post Office and it is just dangerous for them.
“I just don’t want to someone to get hurt before anything is done.”
Adrian has approached both the police, Doncaster Council and even passing traffic wardens about the situation, but as yet nothing has been done to improve the situation.
He has also collected a dossier of photographs of cars parked on kerbs and in front of shops to present to councillors and police.
He has noted the situation is particularly bad between Christ Church Road and Broxholme Lane, where he has spotted illegal parking, vehicles mounting the curb to park on the pavement and delivery vehicles parking on the pavement blocking the path completely.
He added, he regularly sees children having to step out into the traffic too as cars have pulled in to park in front of one of the shops.
South Yorkshire Police and Doncaster Council were both approached for comment on the parking problems but were unable to do so before the paper went to press.
