A Wath man suffered life threatening injuries after he was blasted at short range when he answered his door to a gunman.

Police have described the shooting of the 42-year-old father of one - named locally as Tyrone Woodhead - on Doncaster Road on Thursday night as a “targeted attack”.

Doncaster Road was cordoned off to traffic as police mounted a huge operation to trace the attacker - who was still on the loose on Friday.

Residents near the home of the man who is married with a daughter, said:

Det Supt Matt Fenwick in charge of the operation, said: “The victim was at home with two family friends when an individual knocked on the door. When he answered the door he was shot.

“He was worked on in terms of first aid and taken to hospital. His injuries are critical.

“From the information I have had at this time this was a targeted attack.

“The man’s family are absolutely distraught. We are giving them the full support they need at this time”.

He described the attack as an isolated incident and added:

“The people of Wath at large are not in any danger.

“If anybody has any information or intelligence to assist with this enquiry, please get in touch.

“There are a number of lines of enquiry and we are looking at forensic evidence. It is important to get this right.”

Mr Woodhead, a delivery driver for a Wath building supplies firm, was described as “well liked “ by his colleagues, who said they were shocked to hear of the attack.
