MINISTERS have given provisional backing for a ban on spitting on the streets of Doncaster.

Doncaster Council has confirmed it has been notified that the proposed ban has been provisional Government support, with a final decision expected in the next few weeks.

It would mean anyone caught spitting on the streets could be taken to court and fined up to £500.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: “I am delighted with this latest news. Spitting is a filthy habit and one that I want rid of from the streets of Doncaster.”
