Doncaster Council is set to get almost £1m to be spent on affordable housing through a deal with a major developer.

Persimmon Homes must provide affordable housing on its planned Manor Farm site in Bessacarr as part of the legal conditions attached to the development.

But the authority’s Planning Committee will be told next week that there has been a lack of interest from registered social landlords in providing shared ownership homes at Manor Farm.

Persimmon has asked if it can pay £959,169 in lieu of providing the shared ownership homes in a variation of the Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 agreement. A quarter of the 234 affordable homes to be built will still be social rented housing.

Planning officers are recommending that the borough’s PLanning Committee, which meets on January 8, agrees to the variation.

The first phase of the Manor Farm development sill see 276 homes built and the overall scheme will also include village greens, woodland and nature areas, a site for a school and improvements to the railway crossing on the site.

Manor Farm, which is off Bawtry Road and will eventually link Besscarr and Rossington, was refused planning permission in 2008 but Persimmon appealed against the decision and a public inquiry upheld the appeal.
