BUDDING apprentices have a special invitation to Dearne Valley College this month - and one of them could land a position with an MP!

The college is welcoming all prospective students and apprentices to visit on January 24 to find out about its full range of courses and apprenticeship schemes.

And Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey has provided one unique opportunity in business administration.

He plans to give an apprentice hopeful the chance to work in his busy Wath constituency office.

The lucky applicant will face tasks such as enquiry responses, communications and liaising with contacts, to dealing with important matters on the MP’s behalf and managing his diary.

Mr Healey is very keen to promote employment through schemes such as apprenticeships across the recession-hit region. He said “I am sure an apprentice will be a great addition to the constituency team and help me in the work I do as local MP.

“This shows that apprenticeships aren’t just for people who want to train as plumbers or electricians – there are apprenticeships out there that allow young people to take a first step in a wide range of different careers.”

“Nationally youth unemployment is touching one million and in the constituency the number of young people out of work for at least a year has more than tripled in the last 12 months”

The college continues to build on its success stories of placing young, talented individuals into local businesses to be trained on-site in a specific industry, benefitting both the apprentice and the business.

College apprenticeships include IT, health and social care, hairdressing, retail, team leading and accounting, among many others.

At the open evening on January 24, potential students will speak directly with teaching staff from each department, to talk about course details and suitability, employment prospects, departments facilities, assessment and teachings methods.

They will also see demonstrations, enjoy interactive taster sessions and have guided tours of the college’s amenities, including a recently refurbished sports centre, a brand new teaching salon and a healthy variety of dining facilities, among others.

For those considering an apprenticeship, the college’s passionate placement team will be on hand, offering live vacancy sign-ups, one-to-one chats and advice.

The team have around 12 live vacancies to fill and visitors can express interest and apply for any that appeal on the night!

Anyone interested in the business administration apprenticeship with Mr Healey, or who would like further information about other opportunities should contact the apprenticeship team on 01709 513147, or simply email apprenticeships@dearne-coll.ac.uk
