more than 500 warning notices were issued to drivers who were causing danger to children by parking up ‘irresponsibly’ outside schools.

Fifty schools across the borough were targeted when the Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Doncaster carried out the operation, which focused on parents picking up or dropping off their children.

This operation was set up as a direct result of feedback from the schools, councillors and Don Valley MP, Caroline Flint.

The manner of parking around schools was causing problems for residents in gaining access to their properties, was making roads unsafe for children to cross and was causing an obstruction to the flow of traffic.

Five hundred and thirty-six advisory notices were issued to drivers about the problems their parking was causing, two fixed penalties were issued for obstruction and two notices were issued for the antisocial use of a motor vehicle.

Parents were advised of the issues their parking caused other road users and that parking on the zig zag lines is illegal and dangerous for the safety of the children they were designed to protect.

A second operation is planned for January when officers will be issuing fixed penalty tickets for these offences, now people have been given the appropriate advice.

Acting sergeant Paul Setterfield from Adwick SNT, who organised the operation, said: “We have listened to the concerns from the community and have conducted high-visibility patrols outside Doncaster schools to show the dangers to the motorists who park indiscriminately.

“We hope people realise the issues they sometimes cause and know that we will act in the future, with council colleagues, to issue tickets to keep school staff, pupils and pedestrians safe.”
