A YOUNG man who fled torture in Uganda has turned his life around and recently become a British citizen with the help of Doncaster College.
Joseph Mpanga, 31, had to flee Uganda after his family was arrested when his army officer father resigned in order to vote for a different candidate in the presidential election.
Joseph was subjected to nine days of torture before friends of his father bribed guards and he managed to escape to the UK.
After arriving in Doncaster and spending some time in hospital recovering from his wounds, he was encouraged to attend Doncaster College to learn English. Joseph graduated from a BA hons English course at the University Centre Doncaster, last year.
Joseph also gained British citizenship and made the oath of allegiance at the Mansion House.
