POLICE have welcomed the news that a man has been slapped with jail-time for biting an officer.
Gary Byrne, 24, appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court charged with assault and a public order offence for his part in a disagreement between a group of people outside a takeaway in Silver Street.
Byrne, of Macauley Crescent, Armthorpe, was captured on CCTV attempting to assault one of the takeaway’s workers and goading staff.
When police arrived he resisted arrest and bit one of the officers.
During his police interview Byrne said he could not remember the January 28 incident because of the excessive amount of alcohol he had drunk.
He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison and received a 12-month drinking ban prohibiting him from entering pubs and clubs in the town centre.
PC Jules Moss said afterwards: “This definitely sends out a clear message that anti-social or violent behaviour under the influence of alcohol will not be tolerated in Doncaster town centre.”
