Money, health and education will be just some of the subjects highlighted at an event hosted by one of Doncaster’s biggest secondary schools.

Balby Carr Community Sports and Science College is holding a family support and advice fair to showcase local services offering practical resources to Doncaster residents.

Professionals with expert knowledge of careers, counselling and wellbeing plus support for potential runaways, young mums and victims of crime will be among those providing much-needed advice and information for pupils and parents.

Money management staff from Doncaster West Development Trust (DWDT) will be sharing seasonal spending tips and smart ways to stretch household budgets as well as giving the lowdown on financial issues affecting families.

As part of a theme to cut the cost of Christmas, DWDT will also be inviting people to sample “Taste the Difference” food products and take part in a free prize draw to win a festive hamper.

They will be joined by members of the national Illegal Money-Lending Team whose shrewd advice on avoiding loan sharks and finding alternatives to high-cost credit will also be timely.

Jessica Congreve of Balby Carr’s student services said the college was keen to highlight existing community services especially in view of ongoing cutbacks and closures.

“Over the years, budgets have been cut and agencies have disappeared so it’s very important to let people know what support is still out there,” she explained.

“We’ve found previously that issues around money and illegal lenders do resonate with people so any advice about that can only be helpful. We have a great mix of agencies attending and the event should be a real showcase for the wide-ranging support Doncaster has to offer,” she added.

The advice fair takes place on Thursday, November 21 between 10am and 2pm in the main hall at Balby Carr College on Weston Road. It is free to attend and refreshments will be available.
