Hard-working nurses from the borough have won a national award for a scheme that has halved the risk of patients on ventilators developing pneumonia.

Critical care nurses from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals were rewarded with the Kimberly-Clark HAI Watchdog Award for preventing infections in intensive care, along with a prize of £1,000.

The team won after carrying out a study to see whether improving oral hygiene would reduce the number of patients developing ventilator-associated pneumonia.
