A successful businessman from Westwoodside been appointed as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Alan Armstrong, 56, was a Board-level director at the Japanese-owned manufacturing company NSK Europe Ltd until May of this year and now runs his own consultancy firm focusing on corporate HR strategy development, talent management, employee engagement and facilitating continuous improvement within organisations.
He is also a member of the Institute of Directors and spent two years as a non-executive director of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce.
Alan’s new role as a non-executive Board member* at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will see him providing external scrutiny and expertise, advising on the Trust’s strategy and plans for the future, ensuring it meets its responsibilities and duties, and holding the executive directors to account.

Speaking of his appointment, Alan said: “I am looking forward to applying my experience and wisdom to the significant challenges within the Trust, particularly supporting the Board in ensuring there is a consistent organisational capability to deliver quality improvements with and through people.”
Alan has spent most of his career working in personnel and human resources in industry. He joined WM Hollins Textiles, part of the Viyella Group, as personnel officer in 1982 and subsequently held roles in Marconi Avionics and the Royal Ordnance, both in the field of defence, before moving to electronics firm Varelco and then the chilled foods company, RF Brookes.
In 1996, he joined NSK Europe Ltd, a Japanese-owned firm that produces bearings for the automotive and general industrial markets, as their Human Resources Manager and rose to Board-level positions. He was their European HR Director from 2010 until May of this year when he left to focus on his consultancy work.
Alan will take up his role as Non-Executive Director at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals with effect from 1 October 2013 and has been appointed for a term of three years. He will be expected to make a positive contribution to the Trust, working around five days per month and participating fully in the work of the Board. The remuneration for the role is £12,000 a year.
*The Trust Board comprises both non-executive and executive members. The five non-executive directors and Chairman are independent and are not employed by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Chief Executive and other executive directors are full-time employees of the Trust.
