Group starts work to improve town

A COMMUNITY group has begun several projects in a bid to regenerate the town.

The Thorne Needs You Action Group has highlighted several areas in need of regeneration, with the Market Place desperately in need of improvements.

Group member Janice Waller has been in touch with Doncaster Council about preserving the town’s listed buildings and improving security for such buildings to combat vandalism has been discussed at the group’s meetings.

Andrew Whitham, of the South Yorkshire Buildings Preservation Trust, has funding to renovate the old Hirst’s buildings in the Market Place.

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint has also met with group members to discuss improvements to the town.

Viv Bothamley, group member, said: “We have been getting quite a bit of feedback since we started the group. We’re getting along fine and making contacts with all the right people.

“There will be lots more to come as we are very busy at the moment.”

The next meeting date is yet to be finalised.
