A South Yorkshire health trust is holding elections to 11 public seats on its Board of Governors.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, which runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Mexbrough Montagu Hospital, is encouraging local people to stand for election as public governors. Eight seats are up for grabs in the Doncaster area, two seats are on offer in Bassetlaw and a further seat for the rest of England and Wales.

Public governors play a vital role in representing the public and influencing how their local hospitals make plans to improve and develop their services. Anyone interested in becoming a public governor for the Trust should submit their nomination before 1 February 2016.

Chairman of the Trust, Chris Scholey said: “The role of the governor is constantly growing and changing and governors are becoming involved in all manner of Trust activities, offering their input at various stages.

“The most important part of being a governor is to hold the Board of Directors to account and give the public a voice in discussions about their local hospitals. The role is very rewarding, especially when you see how your input has contributed to improving the services we offer patients.

“If you want to apply your skills and time to an active role in your local hospitals then please consider standing as a governor.”

You do not need any special qualifications to become a governor; all we ask for is enthusiasm and a desire to help improve patient care. We need governors who will put forward their own views and the views of those in their constituency. As a governor, you will also need to commit time to attending the Annual Members Meeting and four Board of Governors’ meetings a year.

The Trust will provide all necessary training, advice and support for those elected as governors. Governors who are elected will be in post for a period of three years and will be eligible to stand for re-election at the end of that period.

If you are interested in being a governor and want to know more about what it involves or how to stand for election, please get in touch with the Foundation Trust office on 01302 381355 or email them on: foundation.office@dbh.nhs.uk.
