A landscape gardener underwent a pruning of his own to mark the second anniversary of nearly losing his hand in a freak accident.

Andrew Codd, who is more used to trimming lawns and hedges, had his own whiskers chopped off as he bid farewell to his beard two years on from a horrific injury.

The 42-year-old from Wickersley, Rotherham. took on the transformation as a thank you to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital where surgeons helped repair his left hand after an accident involving an angle grinder.

Andrew was cutting a concrete post in his garage when a fault with the grinder caused the disc to slip out of place and cut into his left hand.

As he initially couldn’t shave, Andrew has had his beard ever since and decided to mark the second anniversary with his charity chop at the New Look Hair Salon in Clifton, Rotherham.

Andrew, who is still unable to return to work due to his injuries, said: “After my accident, it was impossible to shave so my beard grew and I became a bit of a hermit, not going anywhere other than hospital appointments.

“The accident changed my life completely and as I had shattered all of the bones in my left hand I have had to undergo hours of surgery and physiotherapy.

“Fundraising has helped me to come to terms with it and accept my disability as I have lost one finger and full use of my left hand.
“I have been bowled over by people’s kindness and this is a great way for me to be able to give something back for all the care I’ve received and am still getting from the amazing staff at the Northern General.”

Nicola Fields, service manager at the hospital’s Reconstructive Plastic and Burns Surgery department where Andrew is being treated said: “It’s great to know Andrew is feeling better and we’re delighted that he has been fundraising for us.
“We’d like to say a massive thank you to him for sacrificing his beard and to everyone who has sponsored him.
