Scores of tortoiseshell butterflies have been spotted basking in the sun at Potteric Carr Nature Reserve.

This is good news for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which was concerned that numbers had fallen to unprecedented levels of late.

Regional manager Caroline Thorogood said: “It is not all doom and gloom for butterflies, with summer this year making a pleasant change - the sunshine has brought out many butterflies into our gardens, fields and green spaces.”
