Wath-based Euro MP Linda McAvan invited Dearne eye doctors to the European Parliament to discuss ways of clamping down on the sale of high powered laser pens.

The Yorkshire and the Humber MEP joined medical experts in Brussels to look at ways of introducing more stringent controls on the use of the devices, which are capable of causing irreversible damage to a person’s eyesight.

The move follows a series of high profile incidents in which lasers, which can reach a distance of up to two miles, have been used to target aircraft and sports players from a distance. The committee is expected to revise rules on the classification of laser pens within the next few months.
